CARS stands for Car Allowance Rebate System and is a program that was recently signed into law by President Obama. This program enables you to receive a voucher on the purchase of a new, more fuel efficient vehicle when you turn in your older less fuel efficient vehicle.

We also have compiled a list of qualifying vehicles so you don't have to go through the process of identifying a car and it might be useful in finding if any of your relatives or friends have cars that qualify.
1. The vehicle cannot be older than 25 years old when you trade it in.
2. You can only trade your vehicle in for a new vehicle purchase or new vehicle lease with a minimum
of 5 years on the lease.
3. Your current vehicle must get 18 miles per gallon or LESS, but the requirements for heavy trucks, cargo vans and work vehicles differ.
4. The trade-in vehicle must be registered and insured for one full year before you are able to trade it in to qualify.
5. There is no physical voucher or check involved, the dealership will give you a credit at the time of purchase.
My car isn't built in America, do I still qualify?
Yes. The program is not restricted to domestic vehicles. You can trade in and purchase any type of vehicle, regardless of where it was purchased.
Are all dealers qualified?
No, not all dealerships will be participating in this program, they must be registered through the NHTSA in order to be eligible. You can check out our directory of registered dealers here.I JUST traded my car in, can I still receive a voucher?
